Netanyahu and Abbas to Begin Direct Mideast Peace Talks

Helene Cooper and Mark Landler, The New York Times

02 September 10

The Israeli and Palestinian leaders were to open direct peace negotiations Thursday after committing to work to end the conflict that has endured for six decades.

The talks are to be held at the State Department, where they will take place under the eye of Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

On Wednesday night, President Obama appeared with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and President Mahmoud Abbas of the Palestinian Authority in a remarkable tableau at the White House, and vowed to do everything within his power in the next year to achieve the comprehensive agreement that has eluded negotiators since Israel was established.

With them were the leaders of the only Arab states with whom Israel has made peace, President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt and King Abdullah II of Jordan.

If Israel continues to be referred to as "a Jewish state" rather than just the State of Israel, there will be, or should be outright refusal to allow that. No other country in the world has the right to call itself by any special faith or religion. Israel is composed of jews, muslims, christians, atheists, druse, etc. etc. and all of these should have equal rights as citizens of that piece of land.

When South Africa assigned rights according to race they called it apartheid. When Israel assigns rights according to religion they call it the only democracy in the Middle East.

Unless Obama has some surprise to end this scam, it is a waste if time and money for us. Israel will get more time to consolidate its conquests and bushels full of US money and new weapons courtesy of our our Congress with Pelosi, Reid, Lieberman leading the gang of the Jewish Lobby's well paid friends. Netanyahu does not want OUR suggested Peace, he can get what he wants by force while enjoying our subsidies. Abbas has not power to deliver until Palestine becomes a state. It is a scam to continue this musical chairs when a State of Palestine can be declared on the UN 67 decision without additional negotiations. Those can come later. What is there to negotiate to declare a State. The deadline we need is an end to our subsidies as now.

If Israel continues building settlements, stop all aid and embargo them like we do Iran and North Korea. Israel is more of a threat to our security and economic interests than any other power. Secretary Clinton knows the score and how daunting is to go against the wealthiest and most powerful lobby in the world. She could becomes the first woman to make diplomatic history. The stakes are high. It helps the the King of Jordan is there and I hope they listen to him. He's realistic, smart and level-headed. He knows what's possible and what isn't.

Perhaps if the US would keep it's noses out of their internal affairs, there could be peace between the two warring parties.

Wait, that can't happen, we need Israel to buy our weapons to keep the norm going in the mideast.

The whole thing is a sham, if not a shame!
