Paul Harris reports: "The scope of active US and British involvement with the Libyan rebels came under close scrutiny last night as it emerged that western intelligence agents were on the ground in the country and that Barack Obama had signed a secret order authorising covert help."

RSN Special Coverage: Egypt's Struggle for Democracy

Comments

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

I listened to the Media Matters for America tape of Eric Hananoki. I couldn't believe my ears. The argumentation is as stupid as on conservative talkshows. This is not serious and not informative.

No surprise here.

I just hope they know WHO they are arming and advising as I think back to the days when they handed rocket launchers to the Taliban and gold spurs and Lord knows what to Saddam.

When did this country decide to scrap the Constitution? I thought this was still the law of the land. Only Copngress can declare war under the Constitution, and whatever you call it, these actions by Obama are classified as war. Although I voted for him, I am now demanding that Obama be impeached.

Realist, I heard part of an NPR interview with an "analyst" a couple of days ago, and the interviewer asked that very question. The analyst replied that in recent years it's become more accepted that the president has authority to make decisions regarding war, and that Congress has come to play a lesser role in such matters. The manner of his delivery seemed to suggest that questioning the president's role in the ability to wage war was naive. So much for the checks and balances that the Founding Fathers wrote into the Constitution...

The US Constitution more or less went down the tubes in the Bush II Administration. A large portion of America didn't seem to mind at all. Perhaps they were too busy shopping.

CIA are not a moral group. They need to make trouble so that Military can continuously spend our money and Kill our Young Men and Women.
British love Wars, read there newspapers, and their comments, they thrive on invading. For exactly the same reason we left them, they want more and more. Not exactly a role model for Civilized Human Beings?
With all this Intelligencem which I am using sarcastically, in Military 'Covert Operations", why is Bin Laden alive and well in Bush compound? If the Taliban actually Bombed the USA in 9/11 why are they still alive and well?
Bush/Cheney/Military Bombed the USA, proof is, there has not been any terrorist here since. We have had Hurricanes, Avalanches, Oil Spill, Super Bowls, Electric Shut downs on East coast and West...where are these Mythical Beasts? A figment of the CIA. We Killed our own, it was not supposed to be that way, it was supposed to be a crash somewhere but inexperienced fliers either erroneously, for the Military or for themselves. We were the Victims of yet another Plot to overthrow Democracy from within.
It is like someone trying to shoot Bush or Reagan, more nonsense to keep the sheep in USA following the Corrupt.
Religions crippling people to follow the Evil Leaders. Creator is ashamed of us all.

Petrodictatorsh ips will immediately disintegrate the day that oil is no longer central to our economy.

For the cost of a single cruise missile, we could have, and SHOULD have, erected a wind turbine.

Why? Mr Obama, rescind this "finding." Be a man and an American. We the people do not occupy, bomb, or dictate rule.

Jeeze, I can't believe some of you people. Realist, you can demand all you want, but Obama will never be impeached for not getting Congressional approval before entering in this limited engagement. No President since FDR has gotten Congressional approval to go to war. Obviously you're not a very strong Obama supporter if you're ready to dump him over Libya. Who are you going to vote for, Michelle Bachmann? Get real, Realist!

Actually FDR did get around Congress with Lend-Lease. We "loaned" Britain war material because to sell or give it to them required Congressional approval. There is also the question about the "surprise" attack on Pearl Harbor, which got Americans off their isolationist, and pro-Nazi, (Charles Lindberg, Prescott Bush,) duffs. Andrew Jackson completely ignored Congress when it told him to leave native Americans alone in the western territories. He let them be slaughtered anyway. "It's their [Congress] law, let them enforce it." If I knew more American history, I could probably come up with a lot more examples.
Later; Viet Nam was never a declared war. Korea was an undeclared "police action". Congress never voted on either one, although they did vote to approve funding, and they could vote to cut funding for Obama as well.

Oh Bomb Ah! Shame on you, again and again and again.

It sure appears as if you've sold your soul to the devil. Or, perhaps you were a bought out pol. for some time, and we the dumb sheeple got karlroved (i.e. spun, manipulated, distracted) during youR campaign. We were sooooo eager for CHANGE and sooooo full of HOPE.

But, no more - you've slammed the door -

NO MORE WAR!!!!!

I think the US is doing the same thing that other nations did but they called it recognizing the new government.

Something is very wrong. We stopped hearing of hunger as the food shortages get rapidly worse.

Gadhafi totally cut off the Internet in Libya. How could he do more than the Egyptian government had done to try to stop the protests.

Where are the calls to bring Internet service from abroad?

NATO commander Canadian Lt. Gen. Charles Bouchard is in charge now. Unless other nations start bringing in arms and training first, it isn’t likely that the US will. France not the US first attacked
right after the UN resolution to create a “no fly zone”.

I like Italy’s plan to grant amnesty to Gaddafi in exchange for leaving soon. I would even like to see the intern government, consist of more than their share of his tribe. People are vaguely talking of al Qaeda. But basically two situations would benefit bin Laden. If any fancy weapons seized by the rebels ended up on the black market. However the rebels are more anxious to use weapons then sell them.

The second possibly is if things for the rebels seem almost hopeless like the years of hopelessness among Chinese protesters after the Tiananmen Square massacre. When situations look totally hopeless “I ain’t going to take it anymore terrorism has a lot of appeal”. If a successful repression far more brutal than the 1989Chinese massacre happened again it would put a dark cloud over protests even in Wisconsin, again setting back a generation of social justice. So actually the UN so-far accomplished something great that we will never know, unless it gets undone, more detail by clicking on my name and strolling down, or get lively responses at,

It is amazing how The Guardian and other international (non-US) media are our only sources of thorough coverage of this and other key processes impacting us.

US media--and I was part of it long ago--share zero analysis, instead serving as mere puppets for the Washing Distortion Machines.

The real tragedy is the result: Zero trust.
