Report begins: "A few weeks ago, Gen. David Petraeus pulled off a flawless remake of Gen. William Westmoreland’s 1967 performance in which the Vietnam War commander detected 'light at the end of the tunnel' - just months before the Viet Cong launched its Tet offensive, proving the resistance was very much alive and well."

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

Petraeus can spin it any way he wants. It really doesn't matter. Like Westmoreland, he will come out looking rather daft. I'd bet a paycheck or two that in the end, we'll lose this fiasco big time and will have done little more than to bounce around the rubble of a country that has remained undefeated by every invader in its memory. When will we ever learn?

"Light at the end of the tunnel". Right. In 1967, Westmoreland's "light" cost me a few years of my life, and the lives of many of my friends and compatriots, either by death, or lifelong suffering. Even today, over 20% of homeless men are veterans, mostly Viet Nam Era. The "puppet masters" never seem to get hurt. When the "puppets" break, they just cut the strings.
