First paragraph: "With scientific data piling up showing that the world has reached its hottest-ever point in recorded history, global-warming skeptics are facing a high-profile defection from their ranks. Bjorn Lomborg, author of the influential tract 'The Skeptical Environmentalist,' has reversed course on the urgency of global warming, and is now calling for action on 'a challenge humanity must confront.'"

It's clear he was never anything more than an opportunist.

Does anyone else remember the concerns and evidence about global "cooling" in the 1970s? Now we have global "heating" occurring. I wonder what the climate will be like in another 40 years - and if man is truly the cause of this change in climate. I think the only thing that has changed has been the predictions made by man.

Thirty-five years ago global cooling was, at best, a credible hypothesis held by a small minority of climatologists, who even then were widely outnumbered by those who were more concerned about global warming induced by greenhouse gas emissions. It is invalid to equate mid-1970s support for global cooling with contemporary support for global warming, which is virtually unanimous among climatologists who are actively publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Doing so only serves as a rhetorical strategy of climate science denial.

One wonders if Mr. Lomborg acknowledges his very public denial of the importance of global climate change greatly contributed in the delay in doing something about it. One also wonders, but not much, if those who very publicly used "The Sceptical Environmentalis t" as an argument against global warming will be just as public in acknowledging their mistake.

Your headline says Lomborg is a scientist. Isn't he a political science prof, or something like that? Rather than someone with a background in the natural sciences?

Lomborg is a political scientist, not an ecologist, a environmental scientist, nor a climate scientist. As an ecologist, I'm thrilled that he has come around, but I was never too moved by his poorly informed opinions to begin with.
