Intro: "Indigenous and campesino (small-scale farmer) movements in the Andean nation of Bolivia are on the verge of pushing through one of the most radical environmental bills in global history. The 'Mother Earth' law under debate in Bolivia's legislature will almost certainly be approved, as it has already been agreed to by the majority governing party, Movimiento Al Socialismo (MAS)."

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

Earth is a living dynamic system made up of the undivided community of all living beings, who are all interconnected, interdependent and complementary, sharing a common destiny.”
sounds much better than US constitution for Happiness of Homo Destructor.
It is time to change the US political system from the bottom.

Compare values of Bolivia (one of the poorest S. American country) - with money culture and greed/destructive policies of USA ...
Very positive article .. there are alternatives.
Of course this freedom can not be tolerated ... need to liberate Bolivia "people" from Morales ....
"During his first year in office, President Morales moved to fulfill his campaign promises to decriminalize coca cultivation, nationalize the country’s natural gas industry, and enact land reform. These policies pleased his supporters within Bolivia,
but have COMPLICATED Bolivia’s relations with some of its neighboring countries, foreign investors, and the United States ...

The problem is, there--and HERE--what they SAY is divorced from what they DO.

Read the third Comment, by an actual Bolivian, Marcelo Arse (All spelling and capitalization mistakes his)

Based on day to day news you can see that the bolivian vicepresident is anouncing the oppening of the agricultural frontier in areas with forestry vocation in the amazon basin, known to have poor soil for agriculture, destroying in the process rich biodiversity areas.
Or hearing the environmental vice-ministry aproving the oppening of roads disecting protected areas such as Isiboro Sécure Nat. Park or aproving oil exploration in Madidi National Park, the most biodiverse Park in the world, or allowing to become the country to have more deforestation per capita or the most polluting country per capita due to the common practice of slash and burn, destroying forest to increasse the agricultural frontier.

While they SAY they care about the environment, the reality on the ground, (i.e. what they DO!) indicates otherwise! External interests don't even NEED to interfere, they'll mess themselves up!

As to legalizing cocaine, given the violence cocaine fuels, they can't TRULY be surprised that other countries don't like them making a safe-haven for the drug-thugs who could claim "We were only middlemen" or the equivalent!

Let us just wait until the mining industries with all their money and influence get after this!

Maybe a few prayers from us will help though.

What a fantastic start, however. BRAVO!

It didn't help the oil industry when it was nationalized. Its not like they haven't known about it.
If they don't accept it the people will just go on strike again the government will come in and take complete control. They will have nothing rather than some profits from new profit sharing agreements.
Morales is not dumb he has a brilliant economist as his right hand,

Such a radical idea, doing something that actually considers that the Earth needs looking after too, not just the wealth of the world. That should lead to wall of intervention by the great monopolies. Once again, little Bolivia has set a truly great example to the world.

Let us unite to do the same.

I agree. The price of metals goes higher every day. I hope Evo Morales and the MAS are ready for the fight mining and energy interests are sure to put up.

I believe the Earth is a living organism. Not metaphorically; really. The question for the human race is are we a part of that organism, or are we parasites; just so many fleas sucking out the life blood.

This is a great move for Bolivia and the whole world. The UN's Convention on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples goes in this same direction by specifying that some cultures do not view the earth as "private property" and they have no interest in exploiting it. Those human-earth relationships must be respected by all the "capitalist" nations.

The world is changing and we are learning to understand ourselves as a part of nature. We can live in harmony with other living things. But the US and Europe are run by neanderthals who are determined, like the dinosaurs, to make the human species extinct. The drag their knuckles all over the face of the earth leaving destruction and despoilation wherever they go. It would be nice to see them go extinct. We need more leaders like Evo Morales.

"US and Europe are run by Neanderthals"
actually Neanderthals were the non- aggressive - got wiped out by Homo Destructor.
In population ecology I learned that aggressive - self-aggressive species - get extinct.
It seems that the "new" generation - has some pathogenic aggressive gene that drives US to extinction.

For this to succeed it will take the peoples of the earth to support it an force our governments to not only accept Bolivia's plan but to adopt similiar plans.
Governments of the 1% will do everything they can to put this down and institute regime change. They may turn from Iran for a while its combined public/private sector economy policy isn't as much of a threat as the Mother Earth is. This new policy not only nationalizes natural resources but also food & agriculture which significantly affects their profit.
While this is great and a well written law that no one should be against it puts the people in control. The privileged 1% will not allow that. What could be better than Mother Earth? If corporations are people why not Mother Earth? The 1%er will not take the chance of this becoming a world wide phenomenon. They will not allow anything that affects their control & profits. Once this is passed Bolivia will find itself part of the "Axis of Evil".
"We the People" will be faced with a choice. This time it is Mother Earth vs privileged 1% and their corporate identities.
Hopefully "We the People" will come to our senses and choose Mother Earth!
