Hundreds of marchers protesting Arizona's hard-line stance against illegal immigration took to the streets Thursday even as the local sheriff launched raids to arrest illegal migrants.

If this issue was up in Michigan, would all these protesters be whining about Border Patrol agents stopping Canadians, white people, and checking immigration status? I doubt it. I ask you, if you are trying to quell illegal Mexican immigration across the Arizona border, does it make sense to check Mexican people, or perhaps you should check the non-Mexicans instead? Morons! What part of this is 'racist?

What part of ILLEGAL don't people get. Amnesty WILL NOT RAISE WAGES OR STOP ILLEGALS FROM COMING HERE. In fact it will BRING MORE. The goal of the corporations & the US Chamber of Commerce is to push down wages even further. More than the 40%-50% that they already have.
I know people who have lost their jobs to illegals & a couple went out of business because they couldn't compete with co.'s that use illegal labor.
Most illegals get paid under the table & those that don't have committed identity theft or have false docs.
If that isn't true they WOULD NOT BE ILLEGAL now would they.
How many American citizens have to be murdered, have their property destroyed or be threatened on their own land?
By the way the 14th Amendment DOES NOT GIVE CITIZENSHIP TO EVERYONE BORN HERE. The parents HAVE TO BE HERE LEGALLY! "subject to the JURISDICTION OF THE LAW!
Read it!

I'm of Hispanic descent & am sick & tired of always being addressed in Spanish. They even have the gall to get mad at me for not speaking Spanish!

Being against illegal immigration and being for Arizona's SB1070 are not the same thing. You right-wingers have protested things like national identity cards for years and now you want anyone not obviously "white" to have to carry identity papers. How can you expect those of us in the rest of country not to consider you racist? Do you expect any whites to be stopped? I think not. Go crawl back into the holes you crawled out of!

It is important to note here, Pete, that there are few countries on this planet that do not require visitors to carry papers. I have traveled a great deal and have been asked for papers, passport, whatever, even when checking into a hotel. Take a cruise and you will be advised to carry the cabin key with you as proof that you belong somewhere. Passports or papers are required for the ship to be admitted into port.

Identity papers are not unusual, and if you will but look in your own wallet, you will see what I mean.

We have a problem in border states, but in many other states, as well. Asking for identity papers is not unusual. Next time a cop pulls you over - guess what? You're going to have to show some i.d.

Most people want immigration reform. President Bush couldn't get the Republicans to support comprehensive reforms when that party was in control. So the issue didn't have to escalate to this point had both parties addressed the problem. Requiring id
is valid and the question is more focused on applying a different standard to a specific group based on appearance. When you make that determination of ethnicity, then it is a violation of personal liberty.

In the major border states, crime has gone down according to the FBI. Yet, to create fear and play politics - this group is creating fear to inspire anger. Ask the Republicans why they don't want to address immigration reform - clearly it is also being used as a wedge issue for political purposes. Creating a law that focuses on one group to determine if they are documented is profiling. When the US put all Japanese in camps because they were concerned about a few spying, it was wrong. Nothing good comes from generalizing to an entire group.

Gee Glen, I think I will demand that the next cop that stops me show me his ID and if I am not satisfied, he will have to get his birth certificate to show me. Otherwise, I am going to resist arrest and knock his damn block off. Do you think the fact that he's a cop makes him special somehow? I think not. Lot's of cop wanna be's dress like one, so I think they'd better get some pretty damn convincing id papers, like a birth certificate, or I'm going to have to resist. As a citizen, I do have rights, ya' know.

Supermom has a point. There must be simple, understandable laws, and we have them on the books. The issue now is political, rather than pragmatic or legal. The issue really has NOTHING to do with racism, but rather it has to do with national sovereignty and prevention of chaos. Right now we have chaos, which was preventable had the laws been observed.

U.S. citizens are suffering from various economic problems and should not be swept under the rug in favor of those coming here illegally. Anger against illegals taking jobs will only rise.

Millions of Americans want a resolution to this and do not want illegal immigrants gaining ground through aggressive protests that essentially insult citizens. We understand what has happened under NAFTA and U.S. corporations, but that is no reason to crap on legal American citizens.

The Mexican government would not put up with this if the situation were reversed.

Perhaps we should give Mexicans back their land - California, Texas and the entire American Southwest actually belonged to Mexico.

The nacionalism, imperialism, rasism = USA

Sure, and then we could give back all the land in the Middle East to original residents, then go to South America and do the same, then Canada and elsewhere. You get the drift. None of us were alive when land was taken from "mexicans",including those wanting to come here now, or when the Spaniards took land from the indians or when American settlers were stealing land from indians. There is no going back without major upheaval, cultural chaos, environmental damage and stress.

Whether or not anyone will admit it openly, the U.S. already has major problems. Do we also have to take on those of other countries. If our government had any integrity whatsoever they would have never installed NAFTA and CAFTA and would have pressured Mexican leadership to get things under control for their citizens. They do not.

It is easy to feel sorry for and want to protect the illegals that are here. I recently sold my farm in Belize. We grew cucumbers for export, and when harvesting we hired over 100 people. We soon learned that the non-citizen El Salvadorans were the best workers; however, Belize passed a law making it a $10,000 per person crime to hire people there illegally. They all left. The extreme border case is the Island of Hispanola occupied by Haiti (a basket case country) and the Dominican Republic, a clean modern advancing society. The border is patrolled with machine guns; take the guns away and the whole island becomes a disaster. Borders serve a purpose. Visit a grocery store in southern Mexico and notice the guards on each island; a different culture. If Mexicans want to come here do it legally with green cards.

I agree, Midwest Tom. It is difficult to face, in light of human suffering, but folks are going have to face it sooner or later.

Reminds me of the old discussions concerning bomb shelters and who to allow in if there are limited supplies. Should everyone suffer and die, or should some survive to carry on. The migratory press of people is getting worse and even if we understand the cause, there is still survival to consider. Hispanola is a good example.

Perhaps it's time to fight back at the police, the Arizona State Legislature and the Governor. The racism is not going to go away unless people confront it with equal treatment!
