It is very hard to not go off on a angry triad, even though the right wing is very quick with such terms as Nazi, Hitler, Communist, Tyranny, Tyrant, Traitor, not one of us, them and the favorite "UnAmerican". However, in this case "raids' brings to mind evil connotations. While Alfredo Salas had indeed violated the law by having a cracked windshield, one has to wonder how many OTHs (other than Hispanic) were stopped for equipment infractions that day. While "Sixty percent of the nearly 1,000 people arrested in the sweeps since early 2008 have been illegal immigrants", what percentage of the other 40% were Hispanic? What were the "probable causes" for these nearly 1,000 to be stopped before they were arrested. What are the backgrounds of the "trained volunteers"? Since approximately 40% of the undocumented aliens in this country are people who have over stayed their legal entrance permission, how many Caucasians, Blacks and Asians were stopped?

The Sheriff said something to the effect that all illegals were criminals. One would expect a law enforcement official with as much experience as he has to know the difference between a status offense and a criminal offense. It is not a crime to be in the country without authorization. If it were, each detained undocumented detainee would be eligible for all the rights granted a person accused of a crime including a lawyer and jury trial.He's not dealing with the criminal code and he is being dishonest engaging in something worse than those he's roping to turn over to ICE. He is breaking more moral and ethical codes than they are and he should be held accountable. John Wayne was a Sheriff like Reagan was a war hero.....only on the big screen...and not in real life. The Sheriff's backers are making believe they are patriots. They are making up rights they don't really have to persecute people whose ancestors were here long before theirs showing willful ignorance of history and ethnography.

It is easy to rationalize on many levels concerning the border and thousands of people coming into the U.S. and residing as non-citizens. The easy way out, of course, is to cry racism, bigotry, or whatever suits at the moment.

The reality is, a matter of security, border integrity, states rights, sustainable populations regarding the environment, water, etc. The other, unspoken reality is the number of genuine criminals coming across that border and establishing themselves in towns and cities all across the U.S.

Not one person I know who is against illegal immigration wants to see any decent human being persecuted or abused, but let's face it, many are being abused in the jobs they were recruited for and by those assisting them in crossing the border. What there should be is controls to prevent that and controls on the border. Period.

As I said in another post, all we have now is chaos.

Illegal immigration, just as the narcotic traffic, are internal problems. They have absolutely nothing to do with the latinos. The Governor and the Sheriff should go after "patriot citizens", who hire illegal emmigrants and buy illegal drugs. Case solved!

How many more millions of people entering the U.S. can the country sustain? 50 million? 100 million? How many jobs really are available for all of us? How much water? How much food?

The Mexican government should definitely be pressured to take care of their citizens and stop putting the load on the U.S. Why are we not pressuring our own government to do so? Immigrants are coming here not only for jobs, but also are fleeing the violence and disorder in their own countries. The U.S. had no problem attacking a country in the Middle East, giving that as a reason - why don't they want a country on their own border to stabilize and stop the violence and job loss.

Arizona was once a Mexican territory, was it not? Who at that time were the illigal immigrants? At times history does't lie... Perhaps the present residents of this State should remember that and be a bit more "welcoming"?

This thing does have to find its own way through the courts, which is happening. It's an issue (many issues) which needs even more discussion, which is happening.

I *think* most of us in Arizona are embarrassed by Arpaio, and especially lately. But there are just enough votes, evidently.

Read about him on Wikipedia.com He won't be changing, so he'll need to get changed out.

The nacionalism, imperialism, rasism = USA. When we needed them to work on the roofs of the housing boom (bust) the were making $$$ for the US speculators - there was no problem. Right after the housing scam collapsed we started to build the border fence.

The border fence is not working, in Texas, at the very least. First they hired illegal Mexicans to build it and now those same illegal are tearing it down and selling it back to Texas on the black market!
