Obama Calls for $50 Billion Spending on Public Works

By Sheryl Gay Stolberg, The New York Times

06 September 10

President Obama, looking for ways to jump-start the sagging economy and create new jobs, called on Congress on Monday to approve a far-reaching plan to rebuild and modernize the nation's transportation networks - roads, rail and airport runways - over the next six years.

With Democrats facing increasingly bleak re-election prospects, Mr. Obama used a Labor Day visit to a union festival here to lay out the plan, which the White House says could begin creating jobs as early as 2011 if Congress moves quickly. But prospects for a hasty passage seem unlikely, given that lawmakers have only a few weeks before they go home to campaign and Republicans have little interest in giving Democrats any pre-election legislative victories.

"Over the next six years," Mr. Obama promised "we are going to rebuild 150,000 miles of our roads - that's enough to circle the world six times; that's a lot of road. We're going to lay and maintain 4,000 miles of our railways - enough to stretch coast-to-coast. We're going to restore 150 miles of runways and advance a next-generation air-traffic control system to reduce travel time and delays for American travelers - I think everybody can agree on that."

Mr. Obama vowed that the plan, which would include work on high-speed rail lines, would be "fully paid for" and not add to the deficit.

Too little too late. Should be 60 times that amount to restore our crumbling infrastructure, and create the jobs needed to avert deflationary spiral/depression which is now imminent.

Sounds great...will there be any actual follow-through?

150,000 miles of highway and only 4,000 miles of railroad. Does anyone else see anything wrong with this?

Although the amount is less than the earlier bailouts to private sector failures, this is the right approach and ought to be followed by much more of the same. It should have been Obama's first order of business, rather than the last resort. Now it is questionable whether he has the political capital left to change course. We need more public enterprise and social investment.

One more example of Republicans stonewalling good ideas, trying to deny Obama and the Democrats any goodwill among the people. They care nothing about the well-being of this country. They want Obama to fail, and they will gladly sacrifice the common good to make that happen. Their hearts must be tiny and hard as nails.

This stimulus effort will only be successful if a stipulation of the dictate REQUIRES unemployed workers be hired. It will NOT help stimulate the economy if existing construction companies with already employed workers get the money. The idea to stimulate our economy must make its' way to the working man and women if it is to be effective. I'll bet a dime to a donut there is no such stipulations in this spending bill.

What? President Obama wants to use our taxes to rebuild the crumbling of America?

You must be kidding! The republicans will never let that happen. It's essential for them to destroy everything that the Democratic Party has for rebuilding America. That way, they are sure to fool the institutionaliz ed stupidity in the USA to discredit him and win elections.

The most potent enemy the USA has is the Republican Party. Just look at their record throughout the decades.

What Obama is trying to do sounds like a good idea, but too little too late comes to mind. And gee? What about all of those jobs sent overseas? We can't all build infrastructure and much as we need this I don't think this will substitute for a restoration of the manufacturing base in our country.
