Robert Alvarez reports: "Japan's government and nuclear industry, with assistance from the US military, is in a desperate race to stave off multiple nuclear reactor meltdowns - as well as potential fires in pools of spent fuel. As of Sunday afternoon, more than 170,000 people have been evacuated near the reactor sites as radioactive releases have increased."

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

General guidelines: Avoid personal attacks on other forum members; Avoid remarks that are ethnically derogatory; Do not advocate violence, or any illegal activity.

Remember that making the world better begins with responsible action.

And they call nuclear energy "cheap" energy - HA! It is impossible to calculate how expensive it actually is.

The Pacific coastline of the US has subduction fault zones plus high density population areas shockingly similar to Japan. The 4 aging reactors in southern California are equally vulnerable to quakes and tsunamis of equal or greater magnitude. Most profoundly disturbing of all: Easterly prevailing ocean air currents could render the entirety of the nation UNINHABITABLE. The nuclear lobby has persuaded Obama to subsidize another generation of new nukes on our dime with ZERO accountability for the industry itself should "something" go south......

This is unspeakable GENOCIDE. Alternative, available green technologies have none of these associated risks, are totally sustainable, and provide much needed employment. MAKE IT SO.

If God had created a race of beings and then told them "I'm giving you this planet to play with; see how bad you can fuck it up...," they wouldn't have managed it nearly as well as we have in so short a time. And all just so some of us can have a warm place to shit.

" Let's take the most poisonous substance in the world, distribute it across the country, with no plan of how to store it or dispose of it; and let's put it in buildings on faulta and along coastlines throughout the world. And let's build them to withstand only the typical weather and disaters we've encountered in the past. Then, let's tell everyone its for their benifit and make them pay for the cost of building and maintaining the most toxic substance on Earth, but let's make sure it never turns a profit for those peolple."
Dr. Evil to his evil cohorts?
no; actually the nuclear industry

We have an ever increasing population on this planet. The number of global births tick up almost as fast as our national deficit. This simply means we'll have more and more people wanting more and more energy. Maybe someday, more of these people will embrace the notion that "less is more." Well, we can dream.
