ashington, DC - Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) spoke out against the war in Afghanistan, and against the war's funding, at a press conference of the Out of Afghanistan Congressional Caucus.

"Every dollar we spend in Afghanistan, every life we waste there, is a waste," said Nadler. "An intelligent policy is not to try to remake a country that nobody since Genghis Khan has managed to conquer. What makes us think, what arrogance gives us the right to assume that we can succeed where the Moguls, the British, the Soviets, failed.…It will take tens of years, hundreds of billions of dollars, tens of thousands of American lives, and we don't need to do it. We don't need to do it. We, frankly, have no right to do it. It's a fool's errand, and I just hope and pray that we get wise enough to stop sending our young men and women to waste their lives there, and our money that could be used to prop up our own people."

Below is the text of Nadler's remarks, as delivered:

I am Congressman Jerry Nadler of New York. I got started in politics in opposition to the war in Vietnam because we thought that it was a mistake. I don't think that too many historians would disagree today - that every dollar spent and every life wasted in Vietnam was just that - a waste. It did not enhance the security of this country by one bit because it was based on a false premise.

Afghanistan is the same. Every dollar we spend, every life we waste, is a waste. It does not enhance the security of the United States, which is what ought to be our goal. We were attacked on 9/11 by Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda is our enemy and we must fight them. Al Qaeda had bases in Afghanistan; it made sense to go in and destroy those bases, and we did. We have every right, we have every duty to destroy bases, to take out bases that are being used to plot attacks on the United States. But we are told today that there are fewer than one hundred Al Qaeda personnel in all of Afghanistan - their bases are in Pakistan, but we are not invading Pakistan. They have bases in Somalia and Yemen, but we are not invading Somalia and Yemen, G-d forbid we should.

An intelligent policy might be to attack the bases from which mayhem is being plotted against the United States wherever they are. An intelligent policy is not to try to remake a country that nobody since Genghis Khan has managed to conquer. What makes us think, what arrogance gives us the right to assume that we can succeed where the Moguls, the British, the Soviets, failed. No government in Afghanistan, no government in Kabul, has ever been able to make its run and rule the country.

Why have we undertaken to invent a government that is not supported by the majority of the people, that is corrupt, and to impose its will, to impose it on the country? Afghanistan is in the middle of what is, at this point, a 35 year civil war. We have no business intervening in that civil war, we have no ability to win it for one side or the other, and we have no necessity to win it for one side or the other. We have the duty to make sure that bases are not used, but bases can be attacked, specific bases. We don't have to - this whole idea of counter-insurgency, that we are going to persuade the people, those left alive after our firepower is applied, to love the government that we like is absurd.

It will take tens of years, hundreds of billions of dollars, tens of thousands of American lives, and we don't need to do it. We don't need to do it. We, frankly, have no right to do it. It's their country. If they want to have a civil war, we can't stop them. We can't choose the rulers that they have, we don't have to like the rulers that they have, we don't have to like their choices. It's not up to us.

We should not be spending - aside from making sure that specific bases are not being used against us - we should not be spending a nickel, should not be wasting a life. And the lives that are being spent there by our brave men and women are being wasted, because they're being spent in pursuit of an unintelligent, unthought-through, unachievable, and unnecessary goal.

So we ought to pull our troops out as rapidly as possible, and I don't mean by as rapidly as possible as soon as the Afghans can take over. Why are all the Afghans fighting on the other side? We can't train the Afghans on our side to fight, why? Not because they're not bright, not because they're any less literate or more literate than the Taliban. Because the people fighting on our side have no will. They don't have the motive. You can't instill that. If they had the will and the motive they wouldn't need our help. Without the will and the motive, our help cannot help.

So, it's a fool's errand, and I just hope and pray that we get wise enough to stop sending our young men and women to waste their lives there, and our money that could be used to prop up our own people.

Thanks for this article, and thank you, Congressman, for speaking so directly regarding the U.S. policy of murder and control...
Its (this war) is a sham and a ruse ! Al Qaeda is a ruse/ a CIA construct from the Afgans' war with the Soviets. Who believes that 2 airplanes demolished 3 sky scrapers in New York on Sep. 11, 1991 ? Only the fools whom are groomed by the 'bought and sold' Media giants, with their dis-information campaign, thats who. Anyone with a shread of brain stem left in their skull has some understanding that America needs a new investigation (need I say HONEST investigation) into the disaster of Sep.11 .

Thank you, thank you, Congressman Nadler, for your eloquent and thoroughly reasoned analysis of the futility of our war in Afghanistan. We Grandmothers Against the War have been protesting on the streets for almost 7 years, first against the invasion and occupation of Iraq, and now also against the Afghanistan debacle.

I would like you to know that you have the full endorsement and support of Grandmothers Against the War. Please contact me if there's anything we can do to help.

Thank God someone has the courage, the temerity and the integrity to speak clearly and truthfully. Meanwhile, many of our own people are out of work, hungry, in need of education and medical care and we don't have the resources to do it all!!!

Representative Nadler's assessment of our Afghanistan situation is spot on. I am also from the Viet Nam era and feel this needless waste of our brave soldiers' lives, our resources and our reputation dwarfs my reason for marching in the 60s.

A speech of almost unparalleled brillance! More importantly, he's speaking the truth and stating the moral imperative. Bravo, Congressman Nadler!

I'm very relieved & proud that a government representative wrote this article for all to read. I have voiced that similar opinion to others myself.

Whew! Nadler said it all. If Obama ignores this analysis for fear of being a one-term president, he WILL assuredly be a one-term president

+13 # Guest 2010-07-13 10:21
Right on Congressman! You told it like it is and that's refreshing. Too bad Obama has been corrupted by the military and can't see the forest for the trees. Sec. Gates et al are putting the "okeydoke" on our President. Wake up Obama, wake up.

Nadler is right. We should withdraw from Afghanistan immediately. I hope he will keep saying this in congress until it stops funding the war. That's how the criminal war against Vietnam finally was stopped. Cut off the Pentagon's and the warmonger's funding. They sure as hell won't spend their money on war. In fact, they make a profit from war so they are happy to see it go on forever. Remember Rumsfeld -- this is the "long war" it may last for generations, maybe forever. He did not give a shit who got killed.

But Nadler is wrong to say al Queda is our enemy. It is not. It is the enemy of the Saudi Royal family. The US got involved because it has a blood oath to defend the Royal family for eternity. We should break this oath. Let the Royals fight their own battles against disaffected citizens of their country. Why should the US be Saudi Arabia's war slaves?

Attention all Lemmings:
Wake up and leave..We were lied to and deceived in order to get us to go into Afganistan and then lied to so we would "shock and awe" our way to war in Iraq and we are being lied to so we will stay.. Let's GET OUT and let's never do this again

Dear Congressman Nadler,
You are my Congressman and you are one of the few bright lights in Congress. This country runs on lies, both in terms of what most people in power say and in the way the media report the news. You are consistently on the side of reason and compassion and I am ever grateful for your true service to this country. I am so proud to live in the district that elects you time after time. Thank you for your tireless work.
Tom Herman

What if we won a war and nobody knew?
I think we won the war in Afghanistan. The goal was to route out al-Qaida so they could not plan another 9-11. We did that.
When we first went in, we specifically said that Taliban (no matter how distasteful to us) was not the enemy if they turned over al-Qaida.
So when did Taliban become the enemy? They are a political force and that is up to the Afghani people to decide. Taliban can make their political appeal to the Afghani public.
The role of the US is, not to abandon the Afghani people, but to exchange the military for a civilian reconstruction mission (maybe headed by the UN) not to destroy the country, but to help the Afghanis reconstruct it.

The purpose of going into Afghanistan was to make it safe for our corporations to build a pipeline. The invasion was planned long before 9/11. In fact, all our wars are just to make sure the wealthy can get more money.

The really sad thing is that the US is not going to get out of Afghanistan or Iraq. In fact, it will be at war against Iran very soon. That's what Obama's UN sanctions were about -- creating a pretext for war. Soon he will be saying "but Iran has violated UN resolutions." We've heard this before in the case of Iraq.

What to do about US imperialism is a real problem. Nadler needs a plan. Our imperialist class really doesn't care about human life or cost. It does not care about anything other than its own power. And power can only be demonstrated by making others suffer.

Right on Afghanistan, totally WRONG on the Gaza flotilla
attack. Time to question unquestioning support for Israel.

Couldn't agree with you more Jerry. We should get out now and continuously destroy the poppy fields (that fund the taliban and other corrupt war lords) and any threats that arise to our security. Unmanned drones & high altitude bombers should deter the proliferation of Al-Queda training sites.

please Mr. President lets build American schools, highways, bridges and support research for alternative energy and stop wasting lives and money in Afghanistan and Irak and please do not let anyone press you to attack Iran.

I live in the Nadler district and have voted for him over the years. I have been agonizing about adding him to my 'throw all incumbents out' list; having read this, I will be proud to vote for him again. Let's hope the two NY Senators clean up their acts 'cause they sure are on the doubtful list right now. Do they play golf with banksters?

If the various technicians that make the weapons, clothing, vehicles and all the other necessary items used by the military, were employed by the military there would be no money going to Congress from their efforts. Congress would be able to make decisions without being influenced by the big Industrialists. Remember Eisenhower's parting admonition "Beware of the military-industrial complex." Retired Generals/Admirals would not be expecting a big position with Industry

Hooray for Jerry Nadler! He is 1,000% right about the whole Afghanistan/Iraq situations. We must pull out of both places immediately. Not only can we not afford this waste of money and lives, but it is morally wrong. And we MUST PROVIDE JOBS here in our country immediately!!

Thanks Rep Nadler. Get out of Afghanistan and then require a real investigation into the destruction of September 11, 2001. The fraud of 9-11 not only covered up for the mass murderers of 9-11, but was the lie that caused the wrongful death of no less than one and a half million deaths of innocent people in the Middle East.

Eisenhower: Military industrial complex
Gen Smedley Butler "War is a Racket"
So what else is new? Millions get slaughtered and suffer while a few make trillions of dollars..... Wake up!

1950's military industrial complex
(President Eisenhower)
1920's/30's "War is a Racket"
(Gen. Smedley Butler USMC)

Millions die and are maimed so that a few thousand can earn trillions.... So what else is new except that we have perpetual war? Look up "War is a Racket".

And Iran is next! The US goal has been to make all those countries unstable so Israel will be the only stable force. Just like Jimmy Carter said, Israel is trying to recreate the land of David, and our tax dollars are making it so! Hamas and Hezbollah are not enemies, just much needed security for the obvious. I find it amusing that the US government and media insist we hate every resistance fighter that puts up a struggle, I see the big picture and its pretty disgusting!

0 # Guest 2010-07-14 05:55
donnap -- you are right on the mark. The US is fighting all over the middle east to make Israel the hegemony on the middle east. This is the program of really insane people. It is disgusting to see the US turn against the true freedom fighters like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the dozens of other resistance groups that challenge Israeli fascism.

We have to first end our corporatist government by ending the opportunity for the corporate monied interests to buy out our Republican and Democratic congress. Perhaps after that, and after establishing an objective and independent media we can take back our democracy from the corrupt plutocracy it's become and not have war mongering crooks running our government and every other one they can subvert.

+2 # Guest 2010-07-13 19:06
We cannot end the War as long as--- Our Elections are financed with Corporate Money-- and almost ALL Media Enterprises, almost all pipelines for Free Speech and the so-called 'Free Press' in America are owned by just a few Global Corporations-- and if We continue to allow Our Government to contract out every Government function to Corporations-- and if every Weapons System and every bit of Military Purchasing is deliberately farmed out piece meal to hundreds of Congressional Districts throughout the Country by the Corporations profiting from all of this.

Our Government is bought by Corporate Campaign money. Our Media is Owned and Controlled by Global Corporations seeking power and profit for themselves. Our Military has become a Corporate Cash Cow and funnel through which the 'elected' can remain the 'elected.'

Until we end those situations, We will not be able to end any Wars nor have much control over Our own shrinking Government for that matter.

+3 # Guest 2010-07-13 19:59
Bravo Rep. Nadler. Keep fighting and get Congress behind you to pass a bill to get us out of Afghanistan and of Iraq.
We are tired of fighting wars; we need to come together in our beautiful country and make peace and prosperity here, right here in our 50 states.

Not one more American life, military or civilian, should be lost in this God/Forsaken country of Afghanistan. We should pull out all our people immediately, and hopefully, Congress should refuse to give our Military the additional 39 billions of dollars they say are necessary to continue this 9 year War, the longest in the history of the US. We should use the money instead to help our own people, not, by probably wasting a good bit of it on the corruption of the present Government that is Afghanistan. Congressman Nader is right on target, and I can only hope that a majority of our Congressmen/Women, see the light and deny the money to the Military it is now seeking to continue this unnecessary War.

Yes! Is it possible to influence the President to change, and change soon? The military-industrial complex has been so smart to spread the goodies associated with war over every state, so that voters/workers/elected officials have a "local" interest in keeping our war machine going. My state (Washington) has naval bases, Boeing, Ft.Lewis (one of the biggest suppliers of war "personnel"), McChord Air Base, flying people and stuff to the war zone, and a large community of retired military who love living near the BX. Another version of "corporate ownership" of our country. There must be a groundswell of opposition to make withdrawal happen. Sign me up!

I couldn't agree more!. When I see a constant stream of young men sacrificed for no good reason it makes me despair. How could our country repeat the stupidity of Vietnam and Iraq so soon after those attempts to create a Western democracy in such infertile soil? Their culture is so different it cannot even use our weapons without too expensive a training program. How much more difficult to use our view of government, tolerance of political and religious difference, and rejection of corruption! Not to mention the billions so desperately dollars for our schools, roads, public transit, health needs, etc.

Thank you, Jerry for your passionately argued, and right-on insistence that in Afghanistan we are only wasting lives. Please vote against funding this war; no money from the legislature, no war! I, as one of the Grandmothers of the Granny Peace Brigade, assure you that many of us join you in your strong, clear statement.

No war is worth the toll in human lives alone, but we will continue to wage and fight them and watch our young people be killed and maimed.

0 # Guest 2010-07-22 08:55
What we need is more Congressmen Nadlers. You are correct about that waste. There is not thing, not one rock or anything in that place that is worth even one life of our young people. I voted for Obama and will again but I wish he could see the light. Could be he has not been made to be close enough to the pain of the moms and dads of the lost young people. Viet Nam and every war since has bought us nothing. I hope we can find more leaders that agree.
