Warren writes: "This is our moment in history. From marriage equality to investing in public education, from sensible financial regulations to environmental protections, we must decide what kind of people we are and what kind of nation we are going to build. All across the Commonwealth and the country, people want to create a better future for their children and their grandchildren. They want an America in which every kid has the opportunity to succeed."

Protecting and Promoting Equality

By Elizabeth Warren, Blue Mass Group

16 December 11

've had the chance to say it in living rooms and school auditoriums, but I'm glad to have the chance to say it here: No one - no one - should be discriminated against because of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or religion.

I'm deeply proud to be from Massachusetts because the Commonwealth has been the nation's leader in protecting and promoting equality - from marriage equality to the recently passed Transgender Equal Rights Bill. Congress and the President have also recently taken historic steps forward in promoting the cause of fairness and equality: the passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hates Crimes Prevention Act and - after years of effort - the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

We've made extraordinary progress, but there is still much to do.

As other states grapple with whether to support marriage equality, I'm ready to move to the next step: End the two-tiered system created by the Defense of Marriage Act. Our federal government should not be in the business of selecting which married couples it supports and which it treats with contempt. States define marriage among couples, and, once married, all those couples and their families should have the same protections, the same benefits, and the same tax treatments. Fairness and equality are foundational values in our country, and nowhere is that more important than in our families.

In the workplace, people should be hired for what they can do and evaluated on their performance - period. I strongly support the fully inclusive Employee Non-Discrimination Act. Particularly in these uncertain times, people must have confidence that they will be judged on the merits. Again, this speaks to the fairness and equality that mark us as a people.

Finally, Massachusetts has been a leader in combating the rise of bullying. After college, I taught elementary school and saw first hand how important it is for kids to learn in a safe and welcoming environment. We need to help teachers and administrators create and foster an environment that welcomes students and their families, whether kids are being raised in a single parent household, by their grandparents, or by their lesbian moms or gay dads. All children - straight, questioning, perceived, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender - can thrive in school only when they are truly safe and secure.

This is our moment in history. From marriage equality to investing in public education, from sensible financial regulations to environmental protections, we must decide what kind of people we are and what kind of nation we are going to build. All across the Commonwealth and the country, people want to create a better future for their children and their grandchildren. They want an America in which every kid has the opportunity to succeed.

No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

Cuidado, maddave. So many of us fell in love with a man named Obama, and look what it got us: more war/droning, more wealth for the 1% and poverty/slavery for the 99%, more flushing down of the rule of law, etc., tragic etc..

Elizabeth needs to prove herself through actions and not mere words in all kinds of vital justice and peace areas. Fool us once, shame on you - let's not be fooled again. After all, OhBombAh, the pres. who kept so much of the Bushwhacked trash onboard, wanted Elizabeth in his adminsitration. Big questions should arise.

Well now, all cyicism aside, I think the fact that Warren was given the abrupt about-face and "Judas Kiss" by Ob' and his administration for "Knowing too much (as in being really intelligent, ethical, courageous and takin' no shit from anybody)" after working hard to form and become the head of a new Consumer Protection Agency, is pretty good proof that she doesn't kowtow to, or match in lockstep with ANYBODY on any side of the isle.
And look at all the people she tussled with and pissed-off whilst undertaking that formidable formative task.
Nah! -I think she's the real thing for a change! Unfortunately,, Mass' is only one state with one Mrs. Warren -and she makes Scott Brown (and his villainous backers like Karl Rove) look like characters from Tin-Tin comics.

Elizabeth Warren as already proven herself. She has boldly stood up to the bankers and investors and mortgage lenders. She did not mince words. Although she knew that would make life more difficult for her.
She's a hero and she won't disappoint.
To the skeptics and persistently negative: Choosing Warren was a bold and surprising act on Obama's part.
Mangling his name is not an argument--unless it's for a demented attitude.

Elizabeth Warren's Senate candidacy should be a beacon of light to a current generation of young people disillusioned over what passes for leadership in the U.S. today. She is that rare leader with the courage of her convictions, an ability to articulate a direction worth the journey, and the humility to inspire the rest of us. Go Elizabeth!

Exactly. You hit the nail on the head when you said she is a rare leader. The magic word being leader. And rare she is. Others claiming to be leaders are merely puppets just following the establishment and that's not saying much. I only wish she was running in my state. Think we could maybe "clone" her? Her comes our first woman President. Viva Elizabeth!!

Sounds like a partial fix. The right to be a wage slave to our owners?
How about a government sponsored - or at least encouraged - Cooperative movement in which the workers ARE the owners? (nothing less!)

A private peoples non-profit corporation formed by many many small investors could begin by investing in food and alternative energy supply and distribution. Play the game by the same rules that have been made to benefit the 1%. Keep Govt. out of the deal (except to provide the same kind of subsidies it provides for big oil etc.). Turn about is fair play.

I don't think employment is a basic human right like health care is, certainly in America no one should go without a means to earn a living, or food or shelter from the cold...that was the mandate of the Federal Reserve, which they never fulfilled (full employment) but the choices in how we earn a living are ours alone, the real problem in america is that the thieves have taken over our government and have made a devasting impact on our lives. We have no choices this next election, more of the same or even worse...neither is acceptable,...and there is no republican or democrat running for the highest office that have moral character, their souls have already been sold for the highest price... Mrs Warren is a bright light but an exception, people like her generally shy away from this corrupt system. We need more people of character to stand up with us...not for us...this time we need to stand together if there is any hope of recapturing our democracy... however, sadly when a democracy collapses like ours has, and like the Roman and Greek democracies also did (from Corruption) there is no saving it... the Constitution is now just another relic from an ancient time.

Its ironic that we subsidize the extractors of natural resources that belong to ALL Americans but we do SO LITTLE for self employed artists that provide our society with SO MUCH. Only the few artists and those who cede their creativity to the tasteless corporate hacks make it solely from their craft. Unlike much of Europe, we don't appreciate the role that the arts play in our quality of life and most of our wonderfully tallented citizens resign themselves to being bus drivers and waitresses/waiters in order to pay the rent.

+3 # Feral Dogz 2011-12-17 10:33
Americans think art is the animation they see when they are playing a video game or an investment opportunity where they can dump some of the cash they don't know how to otherwise spend. Living artists are not valued since their bodies of work are not yet finite and "rare". The best thing an artist can do to increase the value of his/her work is to die.

0 # Suavane 2011-12-18 15:50
Dear Noitall,

I agree with your opinion regarding the lack of understanding and therefore, appreciation of the role of the artists in our daily lives.

You'd have to move to Cuba to get a human right to employment.

Now who gives me a '-' for the truth? Check it out. In Cuba, people operate the elevators, people keep things tidy, or get educated as professionals or artists or it is their right to not work and live the consequences. Of course, my experience was before the USSR disappeared. With this immoral embargo that peace-loving U.S.A. has had against Cuba for not opening it's doors and natural resources to our private sector, times are pretty tight although, remember, during Katrina, Cuba sent a hospital ship and doctors but PROUD America turned down their help (after all, how would that look). Look where Katrina victims are today (but our govt. doesn't seem to worry about that). All isn't as you read in the newspapers or hear on TV.

You give me hope Elizabeth, you're SO sensible and intelligent, RARE qualities indeed, in this age of instant gratification and the "I'm up, pull up the rope" mentality that pervades our Society today. Simple Truths seem so hard to understand by the Political Elite in Washington. They complicate EVERYTHING and foster the notion that the Wealthy deserve EVERYTHING and the working poor must scratch for a living. It will be a better day when you are elected to the Senate next November. Then, we will begin to see Justice, at last, being served! The People, UNITED, will NEVER be defeated! Vote Democratic!

+3 # colvictoria 2011-12-16 18:13
"Vote Democratic"? What is so democratic about Obama? What has he done to help the poor? What has he done to raise the status of poor blacks living in some of the most appalling conditions all across America's big cities even CHICAGO?
If voting democratic is what is going to save America I think you are in for a RUDE AWAKENING.
Obama serves the interests of the corporate elite and no one else. Both the DEM and REP parties are paid off by these multi-billionaires.
When the s--- hits the fan as the dollar collapses and we have riots and looting in our streets he will be the first to declare Martial Law and send the troops out and put as many people in perpetual detention.
Yes you and I who have voted Democratic all of our lives can be arrested and detained if we dare take to the streets and express our outrage.

Honestly, colvictoria? Are you so hopeless and helpless and defeated by what's happening in the World today? Elizabeth Warren isn't the only reason to be hopeful these days. People are taking to the streets and telling their truth to power as evidenced by the Occupy Movements all over the Country! Would you have rather had McCain and Palin in the White House for the past three years? President Obama has done REMARKABLY well considering what little help he's gotten from the most Self-serving, Congress in American History! Why are you so unwilling to cut him a little slack? He's only one man fighting a Machine that has been up and running for FORTY+ years starting with Ronald Reagan's assault on Unions and the middle class. People like Bernie Sanders, Dennis Kucinich and, soon, Elizabeth Warren will be on the battlements FIGHTING for our Constitutional rights so we're not TOTALLY defenseless. Justice is coming on Election Day 2012! The People, UNITED, will NEVER be defeated (OR jailed without due process)! Vote Democratic!

Come to Obama and Rahm's hometown and see how he supports the Chicago Teachers Union. They want to crush the union and privatize all the public schools. They are closing down the neighborhood schools in mainly black neighborhoods where people live in dire poverty and crime. They are firing teachers who have 15-20 years and are only hiring new ed grads so they can pay them less. The charter schools which are springing up everywhere do not allow unions. They do not want teachers to work toward retirement b/c they don't want to pay them a pension.
I am clearly aware of the massive protests and that gives me some hope but we cannot walk with blinders on and see the DEMS as our saving grace. Like you say the People United El Pueblo Unido Jamas Sera Vencido.
Nothing that is great in this country came without great sacrifice and there has been much bloodshed. Please do not put anyone on a pedestal. Obama is hated by many people. His army and drones and special operations have killed many innocent people. These are real lives real blood and that is an injustice that will come back to haunt all of us.

Colvictoria - You've been reading too much apocalyptic fiction. With that attitude, nothing will change and you've given up. Look at Wisconsin, Ohio, and the positive news that comes from RSN. This article is about Warren and her stance. And on the subject of voting, what's the alternative?

If the Obama supporters want to split the progressive vote and give the White House to the Republican terrorists that is on them, because there are enough Independents who will not vote for Obama, as well as disenchanted Democrats that he has zero chance of being reelected. But, a true Progressive could enjoy a landslide victory, by leveraging the 90% and growing dissatisfaction with Congress. While I will never vote for another Republican as long as I live, the tax reduction extension welfare entitlement bailout for millionaires and billionaires, following the health care capitulation, forfeited my support for President Obama. It is one thing if one does not know what is right, but it is inexcusable when one knows what is right and still refuses to uphold those principles. If one only votes for the lesser of 2 evils the result still cannot be acceptable. It is essential that a candidate that genuinely supports and will fight for the fundamental issues presented in the Rebuild the American Dream movement is identified, recruited, and elected as a 3rd party President to wrestle our country out of the death grip of the multinational corporations.

If President Obama wished to run in 2016, I would wish him well, hoping he had learned what is required to truly represent all of the citizens of this nation, not just the wealthy 2%.

If only it could be true that a person as great as Elizabeth Warren could become the next president of the US. Excuse me for my cynicism but in the WE COUNT! Black Agenda Roundtable Farrakhan stated that Obama was "SELECTED before he was ELECTED" to do the will of the white elite who are Obama's handlers. I don't think these handlers would ever allow someone like Warren to ever assume such a role. Surely she would be a target for assassination. Do you remember what happened to Patrice Lumumba in the CONGO? MLK?, Kennedy?, leaders in South Africa? People of high caliber who speak the truth and fight for justice cannot triumph in a sea of vipers.

Equality ? really... is it possible? Under what parameters?

Conflict - in equality in opportunity vs equality in outcome.

Conflict - In equality of personal choice vs Equality of a collective norm.

No conflict how? - equal respect by government for individual rights. Your rights do not exist because your female/male or black or Asian or Caucasian or theist or atheist - your inherent rights exist because you are human and these inherent rights pre-exist government. Legitimate government was created to protect inherent rights.
There is no inherent right to enslave some for the benefit of others.
