Why Is CNN In Bed With the Tea Party?

By Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting

Network aligns with controversial far-right activists.

onight's Republican debate might look familiar, with a well-known journalist posing questions to a stage full of candidates. But CNN's event is actually a co-production of sorts with the far-right Tea Party Express, raising serious questions about a journalistic outlet's decision to formally partner with a controversial political group.

As CNN explained the relationship (9/8/11):

CNN and the Tea Party Express, along with more than 100 local Tea Party groups from every state across the country, will team up Monday, September 12, to present a first-of-its-kind debate from the site of the 2012 Republican National Convention.

The CNN statement adds:

In addition to questions from [CNN's Wolf] Blitzer, audience members inside the debate hall, made up in part by members from Tea Party groups in 31 states and the District of Columbia, will be invited to ask questions directly to the candidates. Questions will also be taken live from Tea Party members at debate watch parties in Phoenix, Arizona; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Portsmouth, Virginia.

There were earlier indications that the event would be structured to cater to the Tea Party's ideological agenda. The Associated Press (6/14/11) reported that, according to CNN, "topics for the debate will be tailored for the interests of this political insurgent movement." When the partnership was announced, CNN political director Sam Feist (Daily Kos, 12/17/10) called the Tea Party movement "a fascinating, diverse grassroots force."

It's unusual for a centrist news outlet to take an openly partisan group as a partner in producing a political event; we can't recall progressive groups being granted any similar opportunities in recent years.

But the Tea Party Express has been criticized by actual grassroots conservative activists, who liken it to "a GOP-linked slush fund," as a Politico report (12/20/10) noted. The group is connected to a political action committee called Our Country Deserves Better, run by a California-based Republican strategist (New York Times, 9/19/10).

And there's much more. Tea Party Express chairman Mark Williams made a number of bigoted statements before moving from chair to spokesperson in June 2010 - including calling Barack Obama an "Indonesian Muslim turned welfare thug and a racist-in-chief" (CNN, 11/14/09). Williams, unsurprisingly, was also a "birther" who doubted the legitimacy of Obama's birth certificate (Boston Globe, 4/22/10). And he was active in the campaign against efforts to build an Islamic center near Ground Zero, calling it a place to worship "the terrorists' monkey god" (Daily News, 5/19/10).

After Williams, apparently responding to NAACP criticism of Tea Party racism, posted a "satirical" letter from "We Colored People" to Abraham Lincoln (sample "joke": "How will we coloreds ever get a wide screen TV in every room if non-coloreds get to keep what they earn?"), the Express was booted from the National Tea Party Federation, an umbrella group for the conservative protest movement, over its failure to repudiate its spokesperson (Think Progress, 7/19/10).

His successor has a similar record, as the Institute for Research & Education on Human Rights (1/25/11) points out:

Williams was replaced by TPE director of grassroots & coalitions Amy Kremer. But just like Williams, Kremer has a problem with racism. Like Williams, Kremer is a birther. Her blog, Southern Belle Politics, is filled with calumny for the president, including repetition of the (false) charge that he is not a natural-born American. She's also gone out of her way to defend a fellow Tea Partier after he sent out racist emails depicting President Obama as a witch doctor.

It is difficult to imagine why a serious news organization would want to have anything to do with such a group. But CNN has a history of paying them enormous attention, sending reporters out to follow a Tea Party Express bus tour (Crooks & Liars, 4/2/10) and even arranging to broadcast Michele Bachmann's Tea Party Express "response" to Obama's State of the Union address (1/25/11). CNN has also promoted its Tea Party coverage to conservative activists (Mediaite, 4/8/10), writing to Brent Bozell of the right-wing Media Research Center: "Clearly our critics from the left don't think we should be covering the Tea Party movement in the way we are and clearly CNN thinks it's a legitimate and important story."

Is there really a need for another national cable news channel devoted to promoting far-right elements within the Republican Party?

No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

Still think we have a free press dedicated to the truth in this country? Somehow I have a bad feeling that the Fix is already in.

Obama has already been anointed to the presidency for a 2nd term. He hasn't done anything that has interfered with the plutocracy's agenda and he is good window-dressing to the claim that the United States enjoys a non-racist democracy. Just look at the way the media spotlight has been held on sure-losers like Bachmann and Palin. They don't want any kind of real opposition a second Obama administration.

By enhancing the candidacies of nut job Republicans, Obama will coast into a sweeping victory in 2012 with the appearance, if not the substance, of American democracy intact.

Yes I think there is a fair press. It looks like CNN is not a part of it.

Well, i think there may be an opportunity here.

If CNN is really trying to provide an "alternative" to the Republican line with a TP event, then it is quite legitimate for us to demand that CNN provide an alternative to the Democrat line. We could have Van Jones's outfit (Rebuild the Dream), or Kevin Zeese's outfit (Voters for Peace) play the role of the TP.

And in fact, sadly, these really are alternatives to the Democrats. :(

But in any event, if CNN wants to show an alternative to the right of the Republicans, then it is only fair that it show an alternative to the left of the Democrats.

You can use the CNN link in the article to suggest this to CNN if you agree. :)

'Why' questions ain't easy, except when asked when obvious answers exist.

In this CNN case, the answer may be found in the buyout (more appropriately called pushout) of Ted Turner, CNN's founder. Just one more grab by our villainaire rulers for total control of the 'mess' media (including CBS, NBC, CBS, et.al.) here in the U.S. of (greed and power) A.(ddiction).

CNN may have done them in with the exposure of a bunch of idiots. Only Huntsman seems presidential.

Jlohman, yes you are right. I don't think Blitzer realized that he would show us EXACTLY what the republicans are and want:
You get sick? need help? DROP DEAD.
You loose your job? Tough, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN forget about unemployment money.... You want an education. DROP DEAD, HIGHER EDUCATION IS FOR THE RICH ONLY.
WE ARE NO LONGER THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
We are now the country of everyone for him or herself. If you make it fine, if not, DROP DEAD.
This is now the country of the wealthy ........and the rest of us the expendables.
HEAVEN HELP US

Over the years I have watched many television debates, and I tuned in for the last half of last night's. I thought that it was the best debate I have ever seen. There were no pre-arranged questions, and t=they had to give short quick answers. I liked the format if not the candidates.

Even NPR gives the Reppubes the upper hand. I guess they are just too afraid to lose funding or just have no balls.

As long as CNN or any news station sells products, they will pander to the interests of the people who buy their products. CNN is still commercial television. A profit must be made. They see a gold mine of profit in the simple minded Tea Party members who buy things to prove to themselves and their neighbors that they are "successful." We cannot ever trust any news provider to be completely unbiased if it sells products. This is why education is so important--more so than ever before. We must educate our population to analyze and think logically. This can be taught in schools. Education isn't just about knowing American History, it's about understanding the meaning of our history. By the way, the Republican Party is almost anti-education these days. They certainly don't want to fund it. They want to privatize it. Education should be for the rich, right? Many Conservative Christians do Home Schooling, and that is a very dangerous kind of education because it is selective. Children are being kept at home and being taught Creationism. It's scary.

That's the big problem Isar. The republicans are do NOT want an educated citizenry. They want people they can CONTROL. That is why education is constantly cut. We, who UNDERSTAND, know that we need to work harder on improving education. But the wright wing know too that if they want to win they must keep the population as ignorant as possible.

But your article presumes CNN is still a credible news network. Why would you assume that? I now view CNN as the tail, being wagged by the Faux News Network.

Life and lifestyles all depend on what our core beliefs are. Broadcasted propaganda and continuously repeated dogma and doctrines do have an effect. When the media is controlled by the likes of Rupert Murdoch, and the remainder of what used to be journalism has been “bought off”, save for the internet news organizations, focused, orchestrated, fanaticism is the result. Perceptions created via those means are nearly impossible to counter with any high degree of success. When those twisted views are repeated in pulpits across our land, and the line between church and state has been violated, the transition from democracy to theocracy has become fact – and that spells doom for America as a nation. Until journalism reasserts itself back into the honorable and totally truthful position it once held, the right-wing propaganda won’t stop, and the American people will remain the most entertained yet most poorly informed nation of citizens on this planet.

I am not pleased that CNN has joined forces with the Tea Party in the presentation of their "debates" which obviously have a conservative bias. The explanation is offered that they represent grass roots groups from around the country I am sure there are other groups with at least as large a representation which should be offered "equal time . The suspicion among many is that the choice is affected by the availability of money, more of which is available from conservative sympathizers than from the majority of the public, CNN is granted air time on the basis of serving the public in general, not just a moneyed group that it has had to depend on for support in the absence of support from less biased sources. The media has not served the public well in assuming its responsibility to be a “fair and balanced” source of information. I would hope that CNN would exhibit better behavior.

I haven't trusted CNN since before W was elected. They have no legitimacy any more. No network seems to have impartiallity anymore. They all line up to the money gods. MSNBC seems to be the most neutral of them all, as it looks at both sides of the political scene. (though not always) I dread seeing the evening network news as it seems to be a lot of fluff and pandering to the right.

CNN and many media --USA Today and Gannett, etc.--lean to the tea party. Blatantly obvious in both national and local coverage. Lots of advocacy and one-sided journalism.

Why is CNN in bed with the teathuglicans? Because TIME-WARNER HAS OWNED CNN, for at least 9 years that I know of. They are a CONSERVATIVE / REPUBLICAN Media Outlet.

One reason so many media took the wrong turn and united, albeit by compliance and coverage with the tea party, is their fascination with a recent, horrid concept called "community journalism." Instead of providing objective, uninvolved coverage, they chose to unite with the people they covered--in hopes of boosting viewership and circulation. I saw community journalism's birth and the immediate crippling of hard news coverage--that's when I left news reporting. Community journalism was a disgraceful concept hatched by media "leaders" who had never served as hardball reporters. Now look where they have taken us...

The Right now fully owns the media. Yet, we constantly hear their broken record chant "Left Leaning Media"; "We can't get a break" etc. I certainly do not remember the last time I heard any major network or cable news contradict or editorialize on the lies and misconceptions coming from the republicans, be it tea party or not. All the networks helped make the tea party what it is today. Just how many tea baggers are out there, that they deserve such coverage?
