Occupy Oakland - Iraq Veteran Shot in Head With Tear Gas Canister

Scott Olsen, a Marine Corps veteran who served two tours in Iraq, was critically wounded when struck in the head presumably with a tear gas canister. He is presently hospitalized in critical, but stable condition.

We are concerned about a recent drift towards vitriol in the RSN Reader comments section. There is a fine line between moderation and censorship. No one likes a harsh or confrontational forum atmosphere. At the same time everyone wants to be able to express themselves freely. We'll start by encouraging good judgment. If that doesn't work we'll have to ramp up the moderation.

This movement must have great strength and endless perseverance. They must accept a martyr's role, non-violent civil disobedience, as long as it takes. There will be many more of these incidences, yet if we persist, we cannot fail to carry the day! We are the 99%, and we will not be silenced!

This is pretty horrifying (and I protested in the 60's). Once again, police acting as thugs - acting on orders that clearly violate the right of people to peaceably assemble.

What is depressing about this is not ONE officer bothered to check on the injured man. Not one. The lack of humanity displayed, the lack of compassion of a fellow human being just takes my breath away.

Have we become so lawless that we allow the police to do as they like? If I dress in a t-shirt and jeans am I okay to attack, but a three-piece suit make me invulnerable?

The Oakland PD needs to get rid of these thugs. The officer that threw the explosive device needs to find out what it feels like to have a record AND be out of work.

So THIS IS HOW these EVIL, GREEDY, VERMIN, reward our war veterans who fought THEIR WAR based on lies and profit! These soulless money-grubbers are NEITHER RICH NOR WEALTHY--JUST PLAIN GREEDY, EVIL, AND SELFISH!! NOW they send their DOMESTIC thugs (local police) to use weapons against PEACEFUL protesters. Scott Olsen, and ALL of our men and women of the U.S. Military deserve BETTER THAN THIS! This is the lowest of the low! Those cops that did this should be FIRED and PROSECUTED to the fullest extent of the law! SHAMEFUL!!!!
